Integrated writing example: Is Pluto a planet??

The reading passage talks about the choice made by the astronomers to demote Pluto from a regular planet to a dwarf planet and how science needs to self correct when new evidence contradicts old evidence. For example, they first though that Pluto was the size of the Earth, when in fact is the size of the moon. It also states that no major objections have been made to the decision.

In the lecture, the teacher provides evidence to believe that the decision was not made by the entire Astronomical community, because only 500 from nearly 10.000 astronomers voted since it was too difficult to deliver a physical vote. It also talks about how the decision has upset many people around the world.

The lecture contradicts two major points from the passage. First, from the passage one could infer that most of the astronomers voted, since the vote took place in the Astronomical Conference, but the professor said that only 5% of astronomers voted, casting serious doubts on the validity of the voting process.  Second, the passage says that people in general have accepted the idea of Pluto not being a Planet anymore, but the professor says that it has been a big issue among several people, creating the so called Great Pluto War, where many people have sent complaints and requirements to take back the decision.

Therefore, the professor clearly casts doubts about what the reading passage said giving examples of inaccuracies in the information delivered by it.
